                                                          William G. “Bill” Cantrell

was born in Dunham, Kentucky to the late Edward and Hattie Cantrell on June 15, 1942. Bill was the youngest of their five children.  The family moved to Haymond, Kentucky and this is where Bill grew up.

Bill graduated from Fleming-Neon High School in 1962.  Shortly afterwards, he joined the United States Air Force and served from 1963-1967.  He married Margaret Collins on June 23, 1964 and they made their first home in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina while Bill was stationed at the Myrtle Beach Air Force Base.  While there in 1965 they had their first child, William Cantrell, Jr.  Sadly, William died at birth.  Bill and Margaret never forgot William- he was deeply loved and was never far from their thoughts.  When Bill was transferred to Eglin Air Force Base, they relocated to Ft. Walton Beach, Florida.  It was there that in 1966, they welcomed the birth of their son Steven with open arms.  Steven was a happy and healthy baby and Bill was so excited to be a father that he gave his son his very first bath.  The young family remained in Ft. Walton Beach until Bill’s discharge from the Air Force in 1967.  They then relocated to the area of Cincinnati, Ohio, where Bill worked at Hilton Davis Chemical Company and with an ambulance service.  They were living there when a few years later, their daughter Beth was born.  Shortly afterwards, the family relocated to Defiance, Ohio, where Bill worked at General Motors.  Bill and Margaret decided to move back to Kentucky in 1975 and they returned to Bill’s hometown of Dunham.  Bill began working in the coal mines and served on the mine rescue team.  He was a member of the team that responded to the Scotia mine disaster in 1976.  As it was with so many members of the community, this event left a long-lasting impact on Bill and he never forgot about Scotia and talked about it often.  A few years later, Bill went on to become an Electrical Inspector with the Department of Mines and Minerals. Bill took his work very seriously and he deeply cared about the lives of those who worked in the mines and those with whom he worked.  Bill retired in 2003 and shortly thereafter in 2005, he and Margaret began splitting their time between their home in Kentucky and their home in Florida.  Winters were spent in Florida and summers were in Kentucky.  Bill once said that his father had spoken of hoping to visit Florida, and Bill and Margaret were very happy with this comfortable arrangement and they did this every year.

Bill believed in the Bible’s promise for the future of mankind.  On September 7, 2002, Bill was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses.  One of Bill’s favorite scriptures was 3 John 1:4: “No greater joy do I have than this: that I should hear that my children go on walking in the truth.”  Bill had a deep faith in the words at Revelation 21:4: “And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore.  The former things have passed away.”

In April 2019, Bill was diagnosed with lung cancer.  He passed away a short time later at Parrish Medical Center in Titusville, Florida on May 11, 2019.  Bill was surrounded by a large number of loving family and friends who will miss him greatly.  Bill is survived by his dear wife of over 54 years, Margaret.  Surviving also are his son Steven and wife Donna of Titusville, Florida; daughter Beth of Mims, Florida; grandchildren Amanda Baglien and husband Sam of Shamokin, Pennsylvania; William and wife Sarah of Palm Bay, Florida; Jordan Pupa and wife Jenny of Titusville, Florida; and Mitchell Pupa of Titusville, Florida; great-grandchildren Katelyn and Aria Baglien and Mabel Pupa. Survivors also include a large number of friends, nieces and nephews, including special nephews:  Franklin, Arthur, Ed and Gomer Cantrell.
